Prepare for Your Visit to UMMA

Suggestions for in-class preparation before your class visit to UMMA:

  1. Discuss how the field trip relates to your curriculum

  2. Practice observation skills. One possible lesson plan includes the See / Think / Wonder routine from Harvard University’s Project Zero.

  3. Project or print images of the artworks that you may encounter on your tour and share them with students. Posting an image on your door or in the classroom will spark curiosity and questions. Selections of possible images can be found at UMMA's Exchange website.

  4. Introduce vocabulary that the docents may use: landscape, sculpture, portrait, 2D, 3D, texture, media, perspective.

  5. For practical preparation, share two slideshows located on the UMMA Exchange Website:

Pre-Visit Part 2: What Happens in a Museum
