Two seals of the artist
Colophon, signature, and seal of Fei Danxu (1802–1850), dated 1848
This portrait by the Qing dynasty painter Shi Qu depicts the great Ming dynasty portrait painter Zeng Jing (1564–1647). In his inscription, the artist states that this work of 1797 is a copy after a copy of Zeng’s own self-portrait representing himself as a fragile yet elegant old man, seated before a table of writing instruments and holding a pair of eyeglasses in his hand. The portrait style is understandably closely associated with Zeng Jing; for an example of Zeng's portrait style, see UMMA 1966/1.110)
Fei Danxu, the artist who brushed a colophon (commentary) on this painting, is also represented in UMMA collections: see 1982/2.4.
