Subject matter
Lombard was a professor of physiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He began making etchings in 1916 for the joy of it and continued to do so until his passing in 1939. When he first began making etchings he would spend a great deal of time hiking around Monhegan Island in Maine where he summered. These early works often featured seascapes, boats, and large nature scenes. Later in life, as his mobility decreased, he focused on detailed images of nature like this etching of a spruce.

Physical Description
A coniferous tree with a triangular shape consumes most of the print. Its branches are sparse. There is a cliff visible in the background on the right side.
