Subject matter
As an influential member of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Motherwell created works that dealt with the chaos and dynamism of everyday life. Mortality was a common theme in his art work and can be traced back to his sickly childhood. This print is an artist's proof. Motherwell creates a distinct texture for each color, recalling his collages. These forms approximate the perfection of concentric circles, yet diverge enough to make the viewer slightly uncomfortable.
