Subject matterBrett Weston began his career at an early age. His father, Edward Weston, withdrew him from school in 1925, to move to Mexico. During this time, Brett studied under his father and met leading artists of the time, while beginning to develop his own style at the age of 13. He exhibited internationally before the age of 20, including at the influential 1929 exhibition Film und Foto in Stuttgart, Germany. Throughout his seventy year career, Weston produced a large body of work illustrating his technical skill and expert printing style. His photographs often focused on natural subject matter, abstracting plants and landscapes by photographing close-up, cropped scenes. This photograph was taken during a trip to Alaska, though it was never published in a portfolio it features a recurring subject in Weston's work: water lily leaves.
