Bequest of Margaret Watson Parker, 1954/1.266
Although she concentrated on Whistler’s prints, Margaret Watson Parker also occasionally acquired other works by Whistler, including the Museum’s painting Sea and Rain (1865), and this chalk drawing—a study of pose and dress related to the development of a full-length portrait of Frances Leyland now in the Frick Collection in New York City. This drawing of an elegantly dressed woman is also
an example of Whistler’s keen interest in fashion.
