Subject matter
Gerome Kamrowski's work is heavily rooted in both abstract and surrealist movements.  Working with abstract and surrealist artists in New York in the Post World War II era, before moving to Ann Arbor to be a professor of art, Kamrowski's art joined a movement that was breaking off from the Parisian surrealist movement dominated by Andre Breton.  In later works such as this one, his forms become more organic. Subtle touches of color such as the pale pink are barely there against the dark ground of the painting. The broad strokes of white and grey may have been applied with a palette knife indicating the varying techniques Kamrowski was exploring. 

Physical Description
This abstract oil painting has a black background with textured grey and white areas that resemble organic textures such as tree bark, water or bones.  There are subtle touches of pink here and there.
