A &#39;mani&#39; or prayer wheel, a common ritual object used in Tibetan Buddhism: a device made a handle (here a simple wooden stick) supporting a hollow cylindrical drum on a spindle. A small metal weight, attached to one one side of the drum with a cord, allows the wheel to spin with a slight rotation of the wrist. The drum in his case is of hammered metal, with incised patterns of Buddhist auspicious symbols.

An example of a 'mani' or prayer wheel, a common ritual object used in Tibetan Buddhism: a device made a handle (here a wooden stick, with simple incised line designs) supporting a hollow cylindrical drum on a spindle. Here the drum is elaboratedly decorated with rows of inset turquoise stones, as well as a row of Sanskit letters in bone. A small weight of bone attached to one one side of the drum with a metal chain, allows the wheel to spin with a slight rotation of the wrist.

This half-length pastel portrait depicts a woman looking directly out of the portrait with her body turned slightly toward her right. She wears an elaborate diaphanous collar with lace fringes that is tied at the neck with a pink ribbon and a dress made of luxurious fabrics. While the face of the sitter is smooth and idealized, her clothing is rendered with meticulous attention to detail and texture.

This portrait of the poet Matsuo Bashō is constructed with seemingly effortless caligraphic lines, and surrounded by lines from one of the poet's works. The figure sits looking out at the viewer, beside his hat and a square container with a handle. The artist's seal is placed to the left of the figure, visually recalling the objects beside the poet on his other side.

People are appreciating the beauty of the cherry blossoms and some are having picnics under the trees. Below the highland where the cherry trees and the people are, the land leads to the fields and hills in the distance. The sky appears to be red along the edge of the hill, suggesting the time as early evening.
