Credit LineGift of the Estate of James van SwedenSubject matterIn the late-1960s, Gilliam began to create messy, abstract compositions in a variety of media—most well known of these were his un-stretched, drapped canvases. As part of the Washington Color School, he used color as an expressive tool. This work shows some of his early experiments with rearranging geometric cut-out shapes—their traces can be seen throughout this work—in order to further experiment with color and improvisation.
