Subject matter
In this photograph, the photographer Clarence H. White depicts his wife, Jane, seated next to a brightly lit window in an interior domestic space. The light from the window highlights Mrs. White's face as she looks directly at the camera. Her long gown is also illuminated by the light and strongly contrasts with the darkened interior space in which she is seated. In the background, a framed image hangs on the wall. This photogravure was published in 1908 in issue number 23 of the Photo-Secessionist publication Camera Work
