Credit LineGift of Margaret and Howard BondSubject matterNine men occupying various poses on a barque (a small boat)—six are seated while three stand; six look at the viewer while three look in different directions—constitute the main subject of this photograph. Behind, rocks jut out of the sea, which indicates shallow water. A thin strip of gray tone indicates the open sea in the distance, with the vague suggestion of a ship along the horizon line in the upper right. Though the inscription mentions the port of Jaffa, there are few-to-no visual indications of a city. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
Physical DescriptionThis photograph shows a view of nine men, three of them oarsmen, on a small boat currently paused in shallow water.
