Credit LineGift of Margaret and Howard BondSubject matterJust right of center, a man seated in profile on a white horse turns his head toward the viewer. Another man on foot stands facing them from the opposite direction, also positioned in profile. The activities of and relationship between these two figures remain ambiguous. These are the only two figures in an image of the town of Lydda, which forms the backdrop of the scene. The white buildings of the town in the distance appear to blend in with the sky. The main subjects are all kept at a distance and shown with almost clinical reserve. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
