Subject matter
This photograph provides an eye-level view of a section of Nazareth. The so-called Casa Nova can be seen on the left-hand side, with three figures standing on the second-floor balcony. The dark robes and white belts of two of these figures suggest they are Franciscan friars. A steeple with a pointed roof on the other side of the image, evidently attached to building with classicizing architecture, imply the location’s Christian affiliations. The sparse terrain as well as various travelers in the foreground suggests that this is the edge of the town. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils's career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
