Subject matterIn this photograph, a female nude figure stands with her body twisting slightly and facing a small, round mirror. The curve of her body is excentuated by the highlights on her shoulder and the edges of the mirror. As she gazes at her own reflection, her identity is concealed. The soft focus and muted, velvety tones create an evocatitve mood and dreamlike state. This photograph is characterist of Edward Steichen's early nudes. It was included in Issue No. 14 of
Camera Work, an edition entirely devoted to his work and shared with four installation shots by Stieglitz of the newly opened Little Galleries, which Steichen helped design and where he exhibited his work.
Physical DescriptionA nude woman stands with her back to the viewer. Her hands rest on her long dark hair as she gazes into a small, round mirror.
