Subject matter
In this photograph, the aging figure of author Charles Dickens leans on his right hand as he gazes downward, appearing lost in thought. The proximity of the sitter, whose left shoulder almost seems to spill out of the picture plane, as well as Dickens' contemplative demeanor, lend the image a sense of intimacy.
