Credit LineGift of Susan B. and John F. UllrichSubject matterIn Central Africa, metal axes were used as tools and at other times as ceremonial items. The specific function of this axe is unknown. Because it does not have a large, decorated shaft, however, it was most likely not an axe used in ritual contexts.
