Subject matter
Avery suffered a massive heat attack in 1949. Afterwards his paintings became increasingly abstract in form and composed with muted colors. He often painted his daughter March who is the female in the hammock. Avery suffered another massive heart attack in the fall of 1961 that he never fully recovered from.
