According to donor Charles Eisendrath, his father William Eisendrath was the assistant director of The St. Louis Art Museum and founded the Washington University Gallery of Art. Since Laughlin's "On a Theme of White" (1996/1.46) depicts Harriet Hosmer's sculpture "Oenome," which belongs to the collection of Washington University, and since the verso of the photograph's mount bears a dedication to William Eisendrath, it was probably he who commissioned Laughlin to photograph sculpture in the Gallery's [or University's?] collection. The other three photographs given by Charles Eisendrath to the University of Michigan Museum of Art (1996/1.44, 1996/1.45, 1996/1.47) may also belong to the same collection, especially since the first two works show backgrounds similar to that in 1996/1.46.
