Credit LineGift of Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. CarrollLabel copyLucy Ellen Sallick studied at the University of Michigan during her first few undergraduate years. Her still lifes have often featured the tools of her art. This picture shows objects strewn on her studio floor, including artworks (landscapes) as well as painter's implements and materials. The cropping of objects creates a haphazard quality, while the careful arrangement of objects suggests that the disorder is planned. This painting is rendered in white and in cool tones, and brushwork is barely evident. Though her subject matter extols Sallick's art and the instruments of her art making, the painter's sparsity of means minimizes her self-expression.
