The abstract language of form that I have chosen has become a way to explore an interior life of feeling…I wish to make an object that has a powerful presence, but is at the same time inwardly turned, seeming capable of intense self-absorption.
—Beverly Pepper
A painter-turned-sculptor, Pepper’s body of work is remarkably varied, ranging from intimate table top sculptures, such as this piece, to monumental outdoor works and site-specific environmental projects that merge with the landscape. During the 1960s she began to experiment with new materials, particularly industrial metals. In this period her sculptural style also became more geometric, focusing on rectangular cube-like shapes and forms. In Undiscovered Threshold Pepper creates a kind of deconstructed box that spirals open to engage and interact with the space around it.
