The gestural markings of Louisa Chase's woodcuts are vivid testimonies to her involvement in the process of making the work. In "Thicket" the artist's forceful and insistent strokes and gouges reflect the vigor with which she attacks the wood block. The carved marks are organized into a dense network of larger, fragmented forms--body parts and vestiges of landscape. Both threatening and playful, these enigmatic shapes conjure up feverish dreams or raw psychic states, perhaps references to artist's inner world. The vibrant colors juxtaposed with black contribute to a sense of physical and mental tumult.
