Subject matter
This portrait depicts a woman sitting on a couch. She reads a book that she holds above her lap, her right arm resting on the ornate sofa. The fabric of her large dress comprises much of the bottom half of the image. The dark color and ruffles of the dress create visual interest and a compositional flow between the forms of the furniture, human figure, and clothing.
