She studied at Columbia and later at the Clarence H. White School of Photography from 1913-1917. She focused on pictorialist subject matter and studio portraiture until 1927, when she began to document folklore and rural traditions in Appalachia and rural communities throughout North and Southeast. She collaborated with John Jacob Niles on her travels, and later, Julia Peterkin for her work about the vanishing black culture, "Gullah," in South Carolina in
