Subject matter
This scene shows several horse-drawn carriages or buggies parked on a strip of grass beneath the bare branches of a leafless tree. The image relates to a portfolio of twelve photographs of Amish subjects that George Tice produced in the 1960s, and this subject in particular is clearly one that interested the photographer. He created more than one version of the scene, as can be seen by a similar print with the same title that appears as the last photograph in "The Amish Portfolio." Tice may have been intrigued by the parallel between the dying tree and the buggies, emblematic of a culture that itself was dwindling. Or perhaps he saw the carriages as stand-ins for the community members participating in the Sunday meeting referenced in the title; the buggies huddle beneath the tree as if engaged in a summit of their own. Either way, with no horses or passengers in sight, Tice's image is a picturesque if melancholic interpretation of the daily lives of the Amish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
