Subject matter
This scene represents the meeting of the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth as recounted in Luke 1:39-56 in the New Testiment of the Christian Bible. At the time of their meeting, both women are pregant, Mary with the Christ child and Elizabeth with John the Baptist.
