Subject matter
A small girl stands in the center of a grassy field, holding the hems of her skirt out from her body. The white of her dress glows in the sunlight and serves as the focal point of the composition. The stability of her posture--holding still, directly addressing the camera--contrasts with that of other children around her, who mill about in play, while an older man to the left appears in a blur, as if in a hurried run. The foreground is clearly demarcated by a short wire fence that runs across the image behind where the children stand; in the background is a bucolic landscape of rolling hills, illumianted by the sun which peeks out from the clouds.
