Credit LineGift from the Collection of David S. Rosen MD, MPHSubject matterThis photograph depicts a group of children in a cobblestone street with a young girl standing at the center of the composition. The children crowded around all look to her, whereas she looks directly into the camera lens. Standing at the epicenter of the photograph, she extends her arms out from her sides, one hand limply resting on a boy’s shoulder, her other hand grabs at a girl’s arm. Her gaze into the camera’s lens is proud and confident—almost confrontational, though the hint of a smile plays lightly on her lips. The daylight in the scene casts the right side of her face in shadow, while her left is bathed in soft, diffused light. The girl to her right wears a shirt with the words “California Dreaming” emblazoned across it. Behind the kids stands an older man, his face squinting and discerning. The social and composition dynamics in this image impart a sense of youthful confidence.
