Subject matter
Isabel Bishop frequently illustrated daily scenes of life around New York City. The images are often of brief encounters in urban settings and predominantly feature young women. Girl with Newspaper depicts a young woman reading a newspaper on the street. Bishop captures not a rare moment, but a mundane activity. The repetitive shading in the background emphasizes the central figure and creates a sense of drama to this ordinary act.
