Subject matter
In 1937 Benton was commissioned by The Kansas City Star and St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspapers to sketch scenes in the Missouri Bootheel region of the Ohio River Flood of 1937. This scene shows three figures approaching a flooded store in a row boat, possibly looking for supplies or survivors.
