Subject matter
In this photograph, eight officers of the United States Union army sit or stand around a small round table in a bourgeois interior space. The central figure, seated just to the right of a table, is likely General Benjamin Butler. The other men are possibly members of his general staff. Only one figure, the man standing behind the general, looks out at the viewer. The rest have facial expressions ranging from neutral to stern as they gaze in crisscrossing directions.

Physical Description
A photograph of eight men in military garb, five seated and three standing, arranged in a shallow arc in an interior studio setting.
