Subject matter
In this image, Major General Zachary Taylor gazes directly at the viewer. He is situated amid an unspecific locale, as soldiers march in the lower-right background beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. This pictorial format recalls conventions for painted portraits of famous generals in the nineteenth century. This photograph of General Taylor likely reproduces an earlier photogravure, which itself may have been taken from a dageurreotype at some point in the 1840s. Taylor's military career ended in 1849 when he assumed the presidency of the United States.
