Subject matter
In this photograph, United States Navy Captain John R. Goldsborough stands in contrapposto as he looks indirectly out of the picture plane. His long overcoat with wide lapels as well as his visored cap signal his status as a naval officer. Promoted captain in 1862, Goldsborough served with the Atlantic blockade fleet during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
