Subject matter
Komar & Melamid is Russian-born conceptual artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid. Here, the cover of Carter Ratcliff’s book on their work has been painted by the artists, a pictorial signature. In the early seventies, Komar & Melamid founded the artistic movement Sots-Arts, and much of their work challenged the official style of Socialist Realism.  Here, the large, red arrow, pointing backwards, may be a criticism of the RSSR’s Red Army.
