Credit LineGift of Howard and Patricia YamaguchiSubject matterThis kimono required a labor intensive technique called shibori, in which hundreds of hours would have been spent tying up each small section where white can be seen on the fabric before immersing it in dye. Shibori textiles are very expensive due to the time and skill required to produce them.
Physical DescriptionWhite plain-weave with overall black tie-dye design (black acid dye) in hitta kanoko. The pattern consists of rectangular blocks of densely-packed tie-dye knots in rows of 5 x 12. Lining is plain weave white silk with bokashi blue borders.
