Rude Osolnik and Philip Moulthrop represent the Southern woodturning tradition. In the American South, production woodturning made its way into folk traditions, with trained artisans providing usable objects for entire communities. Such artisans usually passed along their skills through apprenticeships, sometimes within families. Philip Moulthrop, for example, is the second of three generations of Moulthrops to professionally turn wood; his father Ed was one of the fathers of contemporary woodturning, and his son Matt now turns professionally as well. Southern woodturned objects were among the first to be recognized internationally, as both First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and President Jimmy Carter presented woodturned vessels from the South as gifts to visiting dignitaries around the world during their White House tenures. Osolnik’s work was also among the very first woodturning objects to be featured in a fine arts museum context.
