As fine arts woodturning has gained in popularity, the practice has spread to other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and various European nations. In New Zealand, woodturners work with Ancient Kauri, a wood sourced from prehistoric logs preserved in bogs on New Zealand’s North Island. The trees, some as old as 2,000 years before being buried around 50,000 years ago, have left logs 40 feet around and almost 200 feet tall. The extraction process for the wood is time-consuming and expensive, which has made Ancient Kauri a much sought-after wood for turners, furniture makers, and collectors.
