Like other woodturning artists of the 1980s and 90s, Burchard embraces a sculptural influence to push against the functional and symmetrical objects of contemporary woodturning’s industrial beginnings. In his Spherical series, Burchard deliberately placed square openings on his round vessels to break the roundness of lathe-turned objects.
After starting out as a furniture-maker’s apprentice in Germany, Burchard moved to North America for art-school training in sculpture and drawing and eventually settled in Oregon, where he runs Cold Mountain Studio.
