Credit LineGift of John J. SchlossSubject matterThe priest is holding a Buddhist priest bell that is typically used in Buddhist ceremonies. The bell is of great significance in Buddhism for its pure ringing sounds meant to purify, beckon, wake up, or show respect. The inscription above includes the four cardinal directions and could be some sort of calling from all regions.
Physical DescriptionIn this hanging scroll, a priest holds a bell up in the air. The priest appears to be older and is painted in black with solid unpatterned robes. Above him is a four-line inscription flanked by one red seal on the upper right and two red seals on the lower left that follow another line of inscription likely to be the painter's name.
