KirkpatrickSubject matterIn this found still life, Kertész depicts a sculptural bust propped on top of a pile of stones, alongside a stem bursting with floral blooms that reaches upward and parallel with the left margin of the photograph. More plants emerge from the crevices between the rocks, and trees and grass can be seen in the background, suggesting the scene takes place in a garden. The sculpture's peaceful expression normalizes the subject, although there is a distinct surreality to this decapitated head nestled amongst flowers and stones.
