Credit LineGift of Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo and Maria PhillipsSubject matterThis design by Paul Rand is a collage of a rooster calling for entries to a contest. The image uses positive and negative space to suggest the head of a rooster. The image could be read as an abstract configuration of color and shape, but the viewer immediately sees the image that is implied by the fragments of color and shapes. The fragmentary image is reminiscent of Dadaism and Rand’s early paintings. The text uses the same color palette as the image.
