Credit LineGift of Mr. Ferdinand RotenLabel copyLouis Marcoussis was a close friend of Juan Gris, with whom he shared a penchant for disciplined, severe compositions and a somewhat melancholy temperament. Marcoussis' Cubist prints have about them a mysterious, brooding quality, a poetic mood. The artist frequented literary circles and a good number of his prints were, as here, produced as book illustrations. This etching is one of ten made by Marcoussis for a 1930 edition of Gérard de Nerval's nover "Aurélia". First published in 1855, this strange and dreamlike book was an important source of inspiration for Surrealist writers.
