Cambiaso developed a distinctive "cubist" drawing style to explore in a schematic way the play of light over three-dimensional forms rationally organized in space. This sheet is a study for one of two paintings for walls of the choir in the church of the SS. Annunziata di Portoria in Genoa. Intriguingly, while the drawing is severely abstract and clarified, the finished canvas is tumultous and densely packed. Further, the joy expressed through the body language of the elect in the drawing became frank erotism in the painting.
