Gift of Dr. Sho ̄ji Hamada, 1967/2.10
Hamada Sho ̄ji presented this bottle to UMMA when he received an honorary doctoral degree from the
University of Michigan in 1967. During his stay in Ann Arbor, he gave several demonstrations at the School
of Art; a film of one such demonstration shows the artist vigorously throwing pots at the age of seventy-three
before an awed audience.
Subject matterStoneware bottle
Physical DescriptionThis rectangular clay bottle has a speckled white glaze that seems to highlight the texture of the stoneware underneath. Three dripped, irregular lines of black glaze create a design on the top, spout, and widest two faces of the bottle.
