An erotic dimension pervades Delvaux’s work, typified by a mood of unrequited longing and suspended gazes. A female nude typically occupies the central position in the foreground. As in this sketch, attention is frequently drawn to erogenous zones—pubic hair, or breasts; here a nipple occupies the very center of the composition.
