Credit LineGift of Linda ButlerSubject matterOne of a series of photographs of Shaker villages that Linda Butler took between 1983-1985, this photograph depicts the inside of a meeting room in Sabbathday Lake, Maine. The image was photographed from the center of the room in between the two rows of benches, and draws attention to the slight asymmetry in the built space. Butler sets up a fascinating comparison between the ceiling beams and geometric regularity of the benches, which are bisected by diagonal beams of light that shine through the meeting room windows and cast parallelogram-shaped shadows on the floor.
