Subject matter
In the Fields #2 is a color woodcut of two horses tied up to a hitching post in a field. Animals were Pierce's first subjects as a young artist, and remained a central theme throughout his artistic career. 

Physical Description
A pair of horses, one black, one brown, harnessed together as if for a plow or wagon, stand in a field with some trees in the background.
