Subject matter
Set in a stone courtyard, this photograph displays a view of a wooden wagon drawn by a donkey, an ox, and a horse. The ox, which is bridled in between the donkey and horse, is light-colored, while the other two animals have dark coats. The wheels of the wagon appear weathered and well used. According to an inscription on the photograph’s back, the sacks piled up on the wagon’s bed are filled with grain. The three animals appear complacent, patiently standing in their harnesses. In the background of this scene, a building with a columned façade stands to the right. Atop a stonewalled ledge are two small church-like buildings, their size suggesting that they are shrines or small chapels.
