Subject matter
Lombard summered in Monhegan, Maine and developed much of his aesthetic and subject matter there. Monhegan was a well known artist colony that had existed since the mid-nineteenth century. The graphite softens the harshness of the objects cluttered on the beach in this drawing. The emphasis is on value rather than line and thus the viewer is not intent on determining what the object is.

Physical Description
Bungalow and junk sits on the edge of the beach. A lighthouse and buildings are situated farther back.
