Subject matter
Taken in the Hungarian village of Tiszaszalka, this photograph depicts an elderly woman sitting on a bench outside of a house feeding a flock of white ducks from the contents of a large bowl in her lap. This timeless subject matter is lent a modern, graphic punch from the striking horizontal bands of paint on the edifice of the building behind the woman, and the decorative pattern of the shadows cast by the leaves of a tree whose trunk frames the left hand side of the image. This photograph was included in a portfolio of 15 prints entitled "A Hungarian Memory," which was published by Hyperion Press in 1980.
