Credit LineGift of the Marvin Felheim CollectionSubject matterThis work was created by Braque as an illustration for a book of poetry by Tristan Tzara, a compilation of his works entitled
La Bonne Heure. Tzara was Romanian poet and artist active in France and one of the founders of Dada. Braque choose a theme common from his later works - still lifes and flowers, but the inky puddled shapes of the plant also nod to Tzara's random Dadaist style.
Physical DescriptionA flower emerges from several puddles of ink, which resemble the buds of other plants. Behind the foremost bud and the flower itself, a light blue shadow exists, mimicking the form of the surrounding plants. The plant is surrounded by a black border below which are the artist's signature (right) and "Epreuve d'artiste" (left).
